A little history of Riomaggiore
The villages, with their magical and mysterious alleyways enclosed in the multi-colored houses, pink, red and yellow, have an ancient and rich tradition of sailors and farmers.

The earliest records date back to Riomaggiore 1240, when the inhabitants of the small villages on the coast of Casen, Cacinagora, Sarico 'and Lemen decided to go down to the sea and create the country so I can' businesses develop more 'fast and safe. All the houses have two entrances: one on the front at the level of the alley, the other on the back up to the upper road: this ensured an escape route in case of attack by the Saracens.

Riomaggiore is a small village where there are many churches: in the upper part you can visit the church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1340. In the village worth a visit the Oratory of Saint Anthony in 1500 and the oratory of San Rocco.

The Castle of Riomaggiore dates from the thirteenth century and was built as a defense against pirates. Our elders tell us that there was a pipe that connected directly to a home in the port and in the village to allow the people to escape from the arrival of pirates. Recently renovated, remain the curtain walls and two round towers. Now you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the town and the sea.

On a hill far is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero overlooking the town and which offers a fantastic view of the sea and is the undisputed protector of the village
